the web sites are created because the companies in the US couldn't penetrate the Chinese market in time. it's all about speed in China, more than the US. as soon as one site releases a feature, it is copied by others.

markets exist. however, as we see with Egypt and Iran, the tools exists (facebook, twitter) but the government censorship is high. Egypt completely shut down its internet recently to silence protesters
